An Efficient Method for Synthesis of the Bis(spirodienone) Derivative of p-tert-Butylcalix[4]arene and Effect of para Substituents on the Analogous Reaction

Abstract
An improved method for synthesis of bis(spirodienone) derivative of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene has been developed by mildly oxidizing the latter with I2 and PEG 200 as a phase-transfer catalyst; the resulting compound containing two cyclohexadienone rings at distal positions (1, 3) is formed in quantitative yield.
