Abstract

Fat embolism has been known since the time of Virchow. Much has been written on the subject in German. In this country it has received some attention in the literature of the last few years. Warthin,¹in 1913, published a monograph with an extensive review of the literature and a thorough discussion of the subject. Because of the difficulty of recognizing the condition clinically and the ease with which it is overlooked by the pathologist, the frequency and seriousness of this condition is probably not fully appreciated. Frazier²mentions three cases of fat embolism following forcible straightening of joints (brisement forcé) which were reported in Europe. Warthin¹collected several others, also from Europe. I am unable to find such a report in the American literature. For that reason, the two cases given here seem to me worth recording. REPORT OF CASES Case 1. —N. L., a white
