Abstract
A novel approach to the study of the reductive dissolution of Fe3O4 by V(pic)− 3 is reported involving X-ray photoelectric spectroscopic studies from single-crystal surfaces. Chemical changes occurring at the surface of magnetite crystals following exposure to this and other reagents have been monitored. Scanning electron micrographs have also been obtained of the etching of crystal planes through the preferential dissolution of Fe3+ ions in the ⟨111⟩ direction perpendicular to the crystal face. Keywords
