The Trigeminal Nerve Cistern

Abstract
The subarachnoid space at the base of the brain is prolonged anteriorly along the rootlets of the trigeminal nerve and envelops the gasserian ganglion to a variable extent. This extension was confirmed by positive contrast cisternography and by radiographic and histologic examination of autopsy specimens. The term “trigeminal cistern” is proposed for this space. The significance in terms of localization for needle placement and diagnosis is discussed.
