Abstract
If an electric arc is forced to burn in a curved line by a toroidal container its position is displaced in direction to the center of curvature due to the inhomogeneous ohmic heating and of the cooling by conduction. The self magnetic-field pushes the arc outwards. Corresponding measurements in Argon at atmospheric pressure with currents from 0.5 to 20 A yield tbe excentric positions depending on current and curvature. The measured functions compare favourably with theory, but only if the deviation from LTE in the calculation of electric conductivity is taken into account.
