Abstract
The amino acids [alpha]-alanine, [beta]-alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, gamma-amino butyric acid, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, leucine, lysine, methionine sulphoxide, phenylalanine, proline, serine, taurine, tyrosine and valine have been identified in extracts of adult houseflies. Aspartic acid and glutamic acid are concentrated in the tissues of the fly and were hardly detectable in the haemolymph. Gamma-aminobutyric acid was detectable only in the head extracts. After injection of the fly with [2-14c]acetate, [alpha]-alanine, aspartic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, glutamic acid, glutamine and proline became labelled. Labelled [alpha]-alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid and proline were identified in a protein hydrolysate from "labelled" flies. Glutamic-alanine- and glutamic-aspartic acid-transaminase activity was demonstrated in sarcosomes isolated from flight-muscle, but these 2 enzyme systems were not detectable in haemolymph.
