Abstract
Substantial growth of universities, whether by internal changes in staff and student populations, or by inter‐institutional mergers raises the question of whether significant economies of scale can be expected. Evidence is emerging that the reverse may be the case in UK institutions with more than 600 faculty‐teachers. Without the discovery of new managerial behaviours for very large institutions, the makers of public policies should not encourage the emergence of a specially subsidized class of universities that are merely large.
