Abstract
Hoarseness was studied in 26 tuberculous patients in Kandy (Sri Lanka). Tuberculous inflammation of the vocal cord or ventricular fold was the cause in 18 cases, in 17 of which the laryngeal infection was due to direct implantation of tubercle bacilli from lung cavities through coughing; in 1 it was probably hematogenous. Hoarseness in the other 8 patients was due to recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, the nerve involved being the mediastinum in 6 cases and the right apical pleura in 3 cases. Hoarseness associated with active inflammatory disease cleared with anti-tuberculous chemotherapy; that associated with fibrosis persisted. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
