Abstract
The White Island crater floor has been monitored for inflation and deflation by relevelling a net of stations installed in 1967 and enlarged subsequently. The period 1972-77 is covered in this paper. Some inflation was observed in 1972 and 1973. In 1974 elevation of almost all stations relative to base was marked. Relative stability in 1975 was followed by strong renewed inflation in 1976, culminating in a magmatic eruption which commenced on 18 December 1976.Keywords
