URIC ACID IN THE CEREBROSPINAL FLUID IN CEREBRAL ATROPHY

Abstract
CSF uric acid and serum uric acid have been determined in 247 male psychiatric patients. In patients without cerebral atrophy or with a non-progressing atrophy a CSF uric acid concentration of 2.1 microgr/ml with standard deviation of 0.8 was found. In patients with a progressing atro-phy the CSFuric acid concentration was significantly increased. In non-atro-phy and non -progressing atrophy a significant regression of CSF uric acid on serum uric acid was found. In progressing atrophy the regression did not dif-fer significantly from zero. CSF uric acid is partly derived from serum uric acid, and partly from other sources. The main "non-serum" source is probably cerebral nucleic acid catabolism. The Jack of significant regression of CSF uric acid on serum uric acid in progressing cerebral atrophy supports this view.
