Abstract
The haustorium of the santalaceous root parasite, Geocaulon lividum, is described and the known host genera listed. The haustorium develops as a lateral outgrowth of the root and does not differentiate fully until penetration of the host has occurred. Clasping folds in the outer portion of the haustorium attach the haustorium firmly to the host. After attachment, the core of the haustorium penetrates through to the xylem of the host. The vascular core consists of three zones: mother root zone, transitional zone, and haustorial zone. Each zone is characterized by distinctive vessel elements the occurrence of which is graphically illustrated.
