Abstract
One hundred acute admissions to Armidale Hospital were questioned carefully about their use of various substances with a potential for addictive misuse. The results confirmed that acute hospital admission correlates with a higher than average rate of substance abuse. The relationship with alcohol abuse was particularly strong. One‐third of all females and one‐half of all males surveyed were regularly using alcohol at risk levels. Keywords
