Abstract
Oceanographers and those engaged in offshore oil exploration and deep ocean mining surveys, as well as military agencies such as the U.S. Navy are well aware of the usefulness of underwater television systems developed over the past four decades. Evolution, rather than revolution, has led to today's small highly reliable underwater television cameras now being used in diverse applications. The recent advantages in monolithic large scale integrated circuit technology will allow the rapid development of high performance miniature television cameras and related equipment for underwater real time viewing in both black-and-white and color with high resolution. Frame grab and store techniques, optical fiber transmission, and bandwidth compression will allow multiple camera high resolution viewing at great ocean depths. Keywords
