The Joint Assessment and Early Treatment Unit in Psycho-Geriatric Care

Abstract
An Assessment Union organized as a joint enterprise by Hospital Geriatric and Psycho-geriatric and Local Authority Welfare Service is described. One hundred elderly patients requiring urgent investigation and treatment presenting with mixed medical, psychiatric and social features were admitted to the Unit. Appropriate hospital accommodation would not otherwise have been readily available to these patients, whose medical needs were frequently unrecognized. Over 50% were successfully treated and returned to the community in 4 weeks. The remainder were transferred to the type of hospital care most suited to their illness and needs. The Joint Assessment and Early Treatment Unit has made a valuable contribution to the health and welfare of the elderly population at risk in the community.
