Abstract
The problem of parietal herniation seems to be a simple mechanical one for which there should be a safe method of repair. In the present study, the bursting strength of abdominal wounds was explored by mechanical investigation and the repair process evaluated at a cellular level by quantitative microscopy. Both methods of investigation show that mesh materials have advantages over nonporous cloth materials in the repair of large defects of the abdominal wall. Keywords
