Thymelicus lineola: Effects of Mowing and Silica Sprays on Populations12

Abstract
Timothy fields are reinfested each year by females of Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) which prefer to oviposit in the leaf sheaths of the lower two nodes. Eggs remained on the stubble in fields mowed after oviposition had occurred. Eggs were found in fields mowed before oviposition on many stems that were missed or cut above the eight-cm level. A laboratory experiment showed that spraying a mowed field with silica would probably reduce reinfestation below economic levels.
