Abstract
Massively obese patients (200) were submitted to 4 variations of jejunoileal bypass during the last decade. The operative mortality rate was 2.5%. Nonfatal postoperative complications occurred in 25%. Best weight losses occurred in patients who had the small intestine shortened to 18-20 in. by end-to-end jejunoileostomy. In follow-up periods up to 10 yr, there were late fatalities, 5 of which were unrelated to jejunoileal bypass. Despite late complications which included renal stones, enterohepatic syndrome and ventral hernia, 66% of the survivors achieved good results by the criteria used. Metabolic improvements include a profound and sustained reduction in plasma concentrations of cholesterol and triglyceride. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
