Absorption and Desorption of Ethylene Oxide

Abstract
Gum rubber, polyethylene and PVC, when sterilized with ethylene oxide mixtures, absorb varying quantities of the gas mixture. This absorbed gas remains as a residual in the sterilized materials for prolonged periods of time unless desorption is accelerated by heating. The amount of residual gas absorbed and retained in the materials is dependent on the type of gas mixture used. The results of sterilization with three different gas mixtures are presented. The author presents data on the amount and nature of the absorbed residual and compares the rate of desorption at ambient conditions with the greatly accelerated rate at higher temperature.
