Abstract
An attempt has been made to develop a wave function for the -state of the molecule using the variation method. The procedure adopted was only partially successful as indicated by the discrepancy between the computed energy of dissociation 2.64 volts and the value obtained from band spectrum data, viz., 3.37 volts. The form of the wave-function indicates that the -state is partially, but not wholly polar.
