Postruminal Digestion of Corn Starch in Steers

Abstract
The digestion of starch posterior to the rumen of steers was estimated following infusions of 200, 400 and 600 gm. purified corn starch into the abomasum twice daily. As the level of infusion was increased more starch was recovered in the posterior ileum, indicating reduced digestibility of the higher levels. Recovery of starch in the feces was lower but also increased with higher levels of infusion. Glucose levels in jugular blood at various times after starch infusion were not elevated, suggesting that starch was not rapidly hydrolyzed in the intestine.
