Abstract
The growth of spinach leaves has been studied from approximately 1 cm long to full size. Over-all growth was measured in terms of area and total number of cells. The differential growth of leaves was measured by the changes in the shape of squares drawn on the leaf surface. Growth differentials in terms of numbers of cells and number displaying mitotic figures were measured in leaf discs taken from different positions within leaves. It was found that cell division in spinach leaves continued until the leaves reach from one-third to one-half full size. Cell division within the lamina of the leaves was not uniform but ceased at an early stage of development in the leaf tip region and continued for an extended period at the base. Keywords
