Abstract
Magnetic and bathymetric profiles across the Pacific—Antarctic Ridge between longitudes 1600 E and ISO' E are discussed. Bathymetry records show that the ridge in this region is asymmetrical, there being little evidence of the normal flank structure south of the ridge. The northern flanks on the other hand can be divided into step provinces and a narrow rift valley runs through the ridge crest. The magnetic records in general show large anomalies over the crest but very poor correlation of anomalies from profile to profile is obtained over the majority of the flanks. The Macquarie Ridge which intersects the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge on the western boundary of the region studied has affected the structure of the main ridge. Similarly the proximity of the ridge to Antarctica must have affected its evolution. Keywords
