Abstract
Tubercle bacilli with a normal sensitivity to streptomycin were obtained from a patient before streptomycin treatment. A culture, resistant to streptomycin in vitro, was obtained from the same patient after treatment for 4 mos. Guinea pigs were infected with either culture. Twenty days after inoculation, daily treatment of 10 animals in each group was begun with streptomycin and was continued until all of the untreated controls had died. Animals infected with the streptomycin-sensitive culture responded favorably to treatment, active lesions of recent origin being present in only 3/10. Streptomycin-resistant tubercle bacilli were obtained from each of these 3 animals. The disease in the animals infected with the streptomycin-resistant culture failed to yield to treatment, the amt. and character of the tuberculosis in the untreated controls and in the treated group being comparable. Keywords
