Abstract
YAG : Nd3+waveguides of dimensions 50 mm by 4 mm by 30 μm, each optically contacted with a glass substrate, were realized by grinding and polishing. The effective refractive indices measured for the waveguide modes at the 0.6328‐μm wavelength agreed well with theory. By coating the plane‐parallel polished endfaces of one of the waveguides with dielectric mirrors, a YAG : Nd 3 + waveguide laser was produced; the threshold of this laser in pulsed operation was 10 J. The pump efficiency (inversion density per pump energy) for this laser was estimated at η> 1012/J mm3, a value which is of the same order of magnitude as that for conventional YAG : Nd3+ lasers pumped in comparable pump systems. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
