Abstract
Examined the involvement of the hippocampus in memory by testing the effect of conflicting previous stimulus experience upon the response of hippocampal units to the stimulus. 2 groups of Holtzman albino rats (N = 33) received different amounts of pseudoconditioning prior to appetitive conditioning. Unit activity was recorded from chronically implanted electrodes during testing. Hippocampal units of those Ss receiving more pseudoconditioning were slower in showing conditioning-induced unit responses. No significant difference in conditioning of the behavioral response was observed nor was any relationship between the changes in unit and behavioral responses. A suggestion of hippocampal involvement in recall as opposed to recognition processes is advanced. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
