Abstract
By anticipating and preventing acute rhythm disorders, the first generation of coronary care units achieved a 50% drop in early postinfarction mortality among patients who lived to reach the hospital. Today's CCU focuses on the problems of power failure and shock in an effort to improve survival even among poor-risk patients, and is simultaneously opening new approaches to therapy through related laboratory and clinical research. Keywords
