Abstract
Pulmonary rehabilitation has become an accepted part of medical practice to improve the quality of life for patients with respiratory impairment. Its demonstrated benefits include reduction in respiratory symptoms, reversal of anxiety and depression, improved ego strength, enhanced ability to carry out activities of daily living, increased exercise ability, reduction in hospital days required, and prolongation of life for selected patients. Programs providing pulmonary rehabilitation should include proper patient selection, initial assessment to determine needs, development of appropriate goals, development of components of care, assessment of patient progress, and arrangement for long-term follow-up. While all components of care may not be needed for every patient, the pulmonary rehabilitation team must be able to provide all these services for patients who do need them. Any patient with respiratory symptoms and an abnormal spirogram should be considered as a candidate for pulmonary rehabilitation. Keywords
