Abstract
The numbers of airborne female Culicoides variipennis (Coquillett) collected with the vehicle-mounted trap at full moon in northeastern Colorado in June, July, and August 1977–78 were inversely proportional to the numbers collected by light trap. Airborne populations of male C. variipennis were inadequately sampled with light traps during all moon phases. Factonal analysis of variance revealed that trap type and moon phase influenced the numbers of airborne female C. variipennis collected, whereas collections of males were affected by trap type alone. Significantly different numbers of female C. variipennis were collected With the 2 trap types at new, full, and last quarter moon and of males during all moon phases.
