Abstract
Volume -pressure and volume-time curves and retractile characteristics of the isolated exsanguinated rat lung were studied in relation to the rate of inflation and deflation (mm.H20 pressure/min.). The striking non-linearity of the volume-pressure curves obtained are believed related to the postmortem collapse and obstruction of the bronchial tree. Significant inflation of the air spaces is possible only after a critical pressure has been reached. The volume-pressure curve, corrected for this obstructive effect, is gently S-shaped and is related to its rubber-like elastic tissue fibers. An analysis of the corrected curve, based on an elastomeric model, has been carried out. Keywords
