Abstract
Dexamethasone was injected into male and female rats in an attempt to determine whether sex differences in the acquisition and extinction of active avoidance behavior were related to differences in ACTH or glucocorticoids. The results suggest that neither ACTH nor the glucocorticoids are involved in sex-typical acquisition or extinction performance, but interpretation of the drug effects on avoidance behavior is complicated by the marked weight loss produced by dexamethasone treatment. This weight loss is apparent within 4 hr. after injection and cannot be prevented satisfactorily by force-feeding.Keywords
