THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS CONDITIONS UPON THE RATE OF ATROPHY IN DENERVATED MUSCLE

Abstract
The adm. of acetylcholine and parathyroid extract, passive extension and electrical stimulation were without influence on the rate of wt. loss from the denervated gastrocnemius muscle of the rat. Atrophy due to tonotomy was slower than that due to denervation. A combination of these 2 conditions resulted in a rate of wt. loss equal to denervation alone. Tension and activity elicited by artificial means could not be substituted for the neurotropic effects resulting from the natural activation of muscle by nerve.
