Abstract
Periodic paralysis appeared in 1 family as a simple dominant, but 1 case, apparently sporadic, was encountered in another. Attacks, which could sometimes be "walked off," were provoked by exertion, emotion, high carbohydrate intake, and exposure to severe cold. The paralysis usually spread proximally from the legs, did not extend above the neck, and sometimes left muscle groups entirely unaffected. The paralyzed muscles were firm. Tendon reflexes were abolished but superficial reflexes were preserved. The electrocardiogram showed lowered T waves and a U wave. In these patients the serum K level was lower than normal but not necessarily during an attack. Keywords
