Abstract
This article considers the possible impact of the implementation of the Education Act 1993 (DfE, 1993) and the establishment of the Special Educational Needs Tribunal on the use of psychometric assessment techniques by educational psychologists(EPs). The results of a survey of assessment practice in local education authority (LEA) psychological services are reported and discussed. A range of implications are considered: for psychological service assessment policies, for individual psychologists’ practice, for presenting evidence to tribunals and for professional training in educational psychology. It is possible that myths about practice could themselves influence professional practice and thus it was thought helpful to carry out an empirical survey to discover what psychologists were actually doing. Keywords
