Inhibitory Effect of Nitrogen Mustard (Bis Beta-Chloroethyl Amine) on Lesions of Experimental Serum Hypersensitiveness.

Abstract
Ten rabbits received intraven. injns. of bis beta chloroethyl amine (HN2), 0.5 mg. per kg. at 3- to 4-day intervals before and after intraven. injn. of 10 cc. of horse serum per kg. An additional 10 rabbits received serum alone. Intradermal skin tests with horse serum and quantitative antibody detns. were performed 3 weeks after serum injn. and the animals were then sacrificed for histologic studies. Both antibody formation and the vascular lesions associated with serum hypersensitiveness were suppressed in rabbits treated with HN2- All rabbits with terminal amts. of antibody in excess of 0.06 mg. N per ml. exhibited vascular lesions. Severity of Arthus reactions was not as well correlated with antibody level, but cutaneous hypersensi- tiveness failed to develop'' in rabbits which did not produce detectable amts. of antibody.
