Abstract
To the Editor: The Swan–Ganz flow-directed balloon-tipped catheter has become a useful tool for determining pressures in the right side of the heart, pulmonary artery and pulmonary wedge in critically ill patients.1 Complications have been infrequent. One case of intracardiac knotting has been reported.2 We wish to call attention to the symptoms and signs associated with an episode of perforation of the pulmonary artery by a Swan–Ganz catheter.A 39-year-old man had an acute myocardial infarction in 1968, followed by progressive angina pectoris.
