Abstract
DDT and its analogs, methoxychlor and 2,2'' bis (p-hydroxy phenyl) 1,1,1 trichloroethane were tested for estrogenic action in ovariectomized rats. The drugs were given subcut. in 3 divided doses. Total doses were 15, 30 and 45 mg. for DDT and methoxychlor and 10, 15, 10, 25, and 45 mg. for the dihydroxy analog. DDT and methoxychlor were inactive at the above doses. The dihydroxy analog elicited an estrus response at all tested doses. From these data it appeared that DDT does not possess direct estrogenic action. The dihydroxy analog while somewhat short (12.5 A) for maximal estrogenic action would be expected to show some activity according to the working hypothesis. Actually it is of high potency relative to non-halogen diphenyl methane derivatives. Keywords
