Abstract
The interpretation of X-ray band emission spectra in terms of densities of states, and the role of transition probabilities and the Auger effect are discussed. The shapes of the aluminium K and L23 spectra are calculated showing the relatively large part played by the latter two effects. Other metal spectra are discussed in the light of this, and extensions of the calculations are suggested. Keywords
