Abstract
The detection and the recognition by an animal of objects in its surroundings are based on its ability to measure spatial contrasts in brightness and-in certain cases- also in colour. The synthesis of electrophysiological and psychophysical data shows that-in spite of the morphological diversity in optical structures-the functioning of the sensory systems that enable animals to perceive brightness- and colour-contrasts is identical throughout the animal kingdom. Keywords
