Volvulus of colon

Abstract
Summary Seventy-four cases of volvulus of the colon are reviewed. In 63 the sigmoid was involved and in 11 the involvement was in the cecum. Methods for improving the mortality rate and decreasing the recurrence rate are discussed. Proctoscopic reduction, when followed in ten to 14 days by resection and anastomosis, is a safe method which should be used more often as a remedy for volvulus of the sigmoid. In recurring episodes of cecal volvulus, right hemicolectomy is the treatment of choice.
