Transmission of Papaya Mosaic Virus by the Green Peach Aphid1

Abstract
Transmission studies were conducted over 5-week test periods using watermelon, cucumber, and papaya as both virus-source plants and test plants. The youngest leaf with mosaic symptoms was the site of acquisition feeding. Watermelon was the best virus-source plant with a total transmission of 20%, followed by papaya with 8.3%, and cucumber with 5.8%. The 3 species of plants did not differ much as test plants. When cucumber was used as the virus-source plant, transmission to watermelon was slightly higher than to the others. When watermelon was used as the virus-source plant, transmission to papaya was slightly lower than to the others. In another experiment the same leaves on a plant were tested each week for the entire 5-week test period. There was no general trend in the transmission rate pattern from week to week. Some plants, however, were better virus-source plants than others.
