Abstract
TEN years have elapsed since Swyer and James1 and Macleod2 described an unusual form of hyperlucency of one lung that appeared to be due to collapse of smaller airways on expiration, with distal air trapping. Most subsequent reports and reviews have stemmed from the British Isles and the Continent,1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 whereas reported cases from America have been few.11 12 13 This discrepancy may be of epidemiologic significance or may reflect a failure to recognize the condition and to investigate further.
