Abstract
Performance-intensity (P-I) characteristics of synthetic-sentence message sets were defined by a crew of four experienced listeners. P-I functions were sigmoidal and relatively steep. The sound pressure level corresponding to 50% correct identification varied from approximately 16 to 20 dB, depending upon experimental conditions and characteristics of the message set. The strategies employed by listeners in the identification task are discussed. Keywords
