Abstract
1. When the larvae of S. salamandra are immersed in distilled water, there is a progressive increase in the sodium concentration of this outside medium, which becomes stople after several hours. This equilibrium point lies between 0.06 and 0.27 mole/litre, but this concentration diminishes after two successive immersions. 2. The gills of the larvae do not appear to be essential for ionic regulation as amputation of these organs does not modify the physiological behaviour. 3. The minimum equilibrium Na concentration in the outside medium rises at low temperatures (below 10°C). Cold, as such, apparently inhibits a possible reabsorption mechanism other than simply modifying the permeability towards sodium. Keywords
