A Device for Holding Objects in the Stomachs of Fish

Abstract
This device consists of a plastic rod that was attached to the isthmus of the fish. One end of the rod was shaped into a loop perpendicular to its long axis to fit precisely the isthmus of the test fish between the first and second gill arches. The other end of the rod was trimmed to extend the desired distance into the stomach. An improper fit about the isthmus was found-to cause excessive erosion of the tissues. During a 51-day feeding study, 15 northern pike, Esox lucius, fitted with the devices fed at the same rate as the five controls. One of the experimental fish carried this device for 226 days without apparent ill effects.
