Abstract
Agriculture originated 11,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent of southwestern Asia. A report on page 1312 of this issue describes the discovery of the site of domestication of einkorn wheat, a founder species for farming, in the Karacadamountains of Turkey. In his Perspective, Diamond discusses why agriculture and indeed much of Western civilization traces its roots to this unique time and place.
