Postpartum Rubella Vaccination

Abstract
One hundred forty-two private physicians who had submitted prenatal blood specimens on 278 rubella-susceptible pregnant women were contacted to determine whether the women had been vaccinated post partum. Only eight physicians had vaccinated at least one patient in this sample population with the result that only 13 of the 278 susceptible women were vaccinated. "Difficulty of follow-up," "physician reluctance," "referred to another physician," and "negative titer not noticed" were usual reasons given for failure to vaccinate. The easiest way to assure that rubella-susceptible women will be protected against rubella is to include vaccination as part of postpartum care, before the women are discharged from the hospital.
