Abstract
Discusses the state of the art in using texture in tactual maps and graphics for visually handicapped persons. Previous studies that have attempted to determine a set of highly discriminable textures are examined in detail. The discrimination of textures occurring within the context of other map symbols is also considered, along with the interference effects of texture on the identification of other classes of map symbols. Finally, suggestions for further research are offered. Keywords
