Abstract
Parathyroid hormone promotes the mitochondrial accumulation of 35S-sulfate and 76As-arsenate as well as phosphate. The accumulation of sulfate, arsenate and phosphate is mutually competitive. The hormonal stimulation of glutamate oxidation in oligomycin- blocked mitochondria depends upon the presence of one of the 3 anions. The anion accumulation and the oxidative response with arsenate are approximately 50%, and with sulfate 25%, of those obtained with phosphate. The physiologic implications of these results are discussed. (Endocrinology74: 388, 1964)Keywords
