[This column has been delayed for one week, as I have pursued more detailed information relating to the events that preceded and occurred on January 27, 1975. I am reminded once again of the motto of the University of Virginia, "For here we are not afraid to follow the truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it."] On Monday, the 27th of January, Dr. G. Donald Whedon, Director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases (NIAMD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), authorized release of the findings of the Biometric Society—which had completed its review of the University Group Diabetes Program (UGDP) Study.
