Abstract
In an attempt to establish the proper surgical management in repairing spinal defects, studies were made of cases of spina bifida cystica. When the sac has ruptured, at whatever age, it is necessary to close the defect immediately. An added factor here, however, is that it is very important that the surface has epithelialized so as to lessen the danger of introducing sepsis within the theca. When a cerebrospinal fistula is present, the operation should be delayed until optimum conditions are present, primarily the eradication of surface infection. In infants suffering from myelocoele it was found that covering the area medullovasculosa with divided skin grafts produced better results than a single graft. Keywords
